Today’s “Tips” From The N.C. State Fair
The Flower and Garden competition handed out its highest honors yesterday. The Arthur K. Pitzer Award, awarded to the best blue ribbon winner in the garden division, was given to the Wakefield High School horticulture program for its Patchwork Quilt Garden.
The Commissioner of Agriculture Award, given to the best exhibit in the Flower and Garden show, was awarded to the Raleigh Garden Club’s Historic Charleston Garden. The competition has many interesting themed categories, including My Favorite Children’s Storybook, Wild Card and Romantic Interlude gardens. For more information or to contact individual winners, contact garden show chairman Spencer Clark at (919) 272-1165.
While Krispy Kreme donuts usually come in a cardboard box, one entry in the decorated cakes competition delivered donuts inside of a cake. Robin Bilodeau of Chapel Hill, a pastry chef at the Carolina Inn, designed the unusual cake after winning a ribbon last year for a dragon-shaped cake. She said she was struck with inspiration while at work, when a coworker brought in a dozen of the tasty treats.
The cake uses a Styrofoam base with a clear, plastic top to showcase actual donuts inside, and took about two days to complete. Contact Bilodeau at (919) 274-1750. Vivian Hammom, superintendent of the cake competition, can be reached today from 3:30 to 10 p.m. at (919) 839-4672 or in the Education Building.
Smithfield the Painting Pig and the Fair’s resident “Pig-casso” is back this year with his paintbrushes and instruments.
The pot-bellied artist, who had a cancerous tumor removed from his nose last year at the N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine, creates “abstract” paintings available for purchase. Find Smithfield and his owner Fran Martin inside the Expo Center. Smithfield performs at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. daily.
