Our “tip-off” from the man in-the-know…
Public Affairs Officer Brian Long takes such good care of us (and you!). Everyday he sends out a little “tip sheet” with what to look out for at the Fair that day. Today’s events include “Military Appreciation Day”, a big Fair anniversary, some boogeying… and more! Read on to see what Brian clued us in on this morning…
- Military concerts are featured on the Kitchen Craft Waterfall stage. Here’s the schedule: 9 a.m., Liberty Brass of the 440th Army Band; 10:30 a.m., Hickabillies (National Guard); noon, 82nd Airborne Chorus; 4 p.m., Navy Four Star Edition.
- Today marks the 80th anniversary of the State Fairgrounds in its present location, as well as the 80th anniversary of the State Fair as a state-owned event. “On Monday, Oct. 22 (1928), Gov. and Mrs. Angus McLean and the red-coated North Carolina State College Marching Band led a parade of dignitaries, including the directors of each of the fair’s departments and their wives, through the main gate, and the state fair was back in business.” In his address to the opening day crowd of twenty thousand people, Governor McLean pointed out the fair now belonged to the people of the state and could succeed only with their support and cooperation. Significantly, he addressed the fair’s special role in showcasing to visitors the experimental work of the State Department of Agriculture and the agricultural extension work of State College.” From The North Carolina State Fair: The First 150 Years by Melton McLaurin.
- Five Pants Dance Revolution finalists – including a minister and 4-year-old “breakdancer” – will be on the Kitchen Craft Waterfall Stage at 2:30 p.m. showing off their craziest moves in their craziest pants. Contestants uploaded videos to YouTube and the top-rated videos were chosen to compete for a Nintendo Wii and a year’s worth of Subway sandwiches. Jared the Subway Guy will also be on hand for the fun with his size-60 pants. View the finalists before they hit the stage at www.YouTube.com/PantsDanceRevolution. **And don’t miss our live stream of the event right here!
- For an old-timey take on the popular Build-A-Bear stores, visit Coyle’s Toyles in the Village of Yesteryear. Jack and Cean Coyle provide the materials for old-fashioned cloth dolls that children help make from scratch. After picking out the front and back of the doll shapes – ranging from bears to mice to human shapes – children help stuff, decorate and sew the dolls together using a vintage Singer sewing machine. This is the couple’s sixth year at the Fair.
- Events on the horizon: Century Farm Family Reunion will take place Thursday, Oct. 23, from 9-11 a.m. in Dorton Arena. Sen. Elizabeth Dole will be the guest speaker. About 1,300 people are expected to attend the event, which celebrates farms that have been in continuous family ownership for 100 years or more. Food Lion Hunger Relief Day is Thursday. Bring four cans of food and get free admission to the Fair. The food goes to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
