Economy Makes Going For The Blue A Little Tougher

Paintings, quilts, antique dresses and even Styrofoam cheeseburgers are just some of the items to be judged at this year’s North Carolina State Fair.
Some competitors brought their items to the fairgrounds in Raleigh on Sunday for the judging to be held this week.
State Fair officials said total registrations are up in almost every category this year.
“We kind of assume that people have been maybe staying at home a little more this year, trying to find something interesting to do with the family,” said Natalie Alford, of the State Fair.
Alford said the economy has helped lead to an increase of 400 entries in the Baked Goods category from last year, 600 more entries in the Crafts and Hobbies category, and almost 1,000 more entries in Horticulture.
“I think people have less money so they’re getting back to basics,” said Janet Potter, who entered two quilts in the competition.
Entries are also up in the Art and Photography category.
“People are getting back to doing things simply, and looking for ways to save money and ways of expressing themselves that doesn’t cost much,” said Cynthia Detris, who said she’s been entering photos into the competitions for years.
Although the increased number of entries will mean more competition, some of those entering said they were still hopeful to take home a blue ribbon.
The State Fair officially begins Thursday and wraps up Oct. 25.
